Tesla Valve Finally Tested...


... Sort of; Tesla's Solid State Masterpiece

For a long time now it has been noteworty that while there are many explanations of the solid state valve designed by Nikola Tesla, a handful of computer model with graphics, a few physical models some with videos on various sites, a couple of computer simulations, there really isnt much in the way of quantified physical testing completed on the device.


In a bid to address this and provide some balance we have produced a bespoke model and conducted some testing.


Given that my own field of experience is in the deisgn, manufacture and application of pumps, from this perspective I find the invention shown here to be of great interest. The Nikola Tesla valvular conduit is something that hasnt seen a great deal of development from its initial inception. The device has been used in some applications, fluidics for example, however useful applicatoins are yet to be identified. what interests me with this device is that it is very simple, requires no moving parts, and forms a conduit that allows a free flow of fluid in one direction, but a restricted flow in the reverse direction. The valvular conduit is not a ckeck valve, it will allow a flow in reversce but at an increased resistance.


Tesla visioned this as a feed to his disc turbine engine, though disc materials limitations hampered implimentation at the time. There have since been improvements in now conventional technologies. However, appliactoins remain for the valve. Fluidics, ram jet fuel feed, mixing to name a few.


To test this device we designed a tubular form of the concept that could be easily fitted in line of a pipe. The design was 3D printed from a very new specificaton of tough and hardwaring resin. For this we used an excellent company called DavCAD who is based in Sussex England.

The part printed well, as did a section of the same that was printed for visualisation purposes. Once ready, and fully cured, we took time to take some images, and set about proving our poor photography skills!.

Ready for testing, We sourced a basic mechanical flow meter (one that had good visual operation for use in a YouTube video), a pressure guage, some tubing and a water supply. We decided to use the mains water supply for this experiment so that we could easily control the flow rate through the valve while recording pressure.

The results were very encouraging. Given that the components was small, and due to the tubular form, not optimum, we did see a diode effect even at the relatively low flow rates we were able to achieve from the mains water tap.


There will now be future tests of more conventional form conduits, and with higher pressures / flow rates. PhysicsHack offer a numer of conduits for sale so that others can try these and other experiments for themselves (see below).
